CLion Features

CLion is a JetBrains IDE for C and C++ that brings everything professional developers need into a single environment, with dedicated support for embedded and automotive development. Built for smooth workflows and productivity, it’s ready for your projects out of the box – from build systems and debuggers to AI that works with you.

JetBrains AI

CLion gives you a powerful AI workspace where you can use AI on your terms. Use Junie, Claude, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Codex, or any agent that supports ACP, all in one place. Bring your own API key (BYOK), connect any MCP-compatible client, and let your agents analyze code, run configurations, and make changes directly in the IDE. And no matter what approach you take, code suggestions are unlimited – no credit consumption, no interruptions.

Any agent, any model

Use Junie, Codex, Claude, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or any agent that supports the Agent Client Protocol (ACP) – all from one chat panel. No tool-switching.

AI Skills

CLion ships with a bundled debugging skill, so your AI agent can walk through breakpoints and variables on its own to track down root causes – and you can add more skills from the library as they arrive.

MCP support

CLion’s built-in MCP server turns the IDE into a tool your AI agents can work with directly. Any other MCP-compatible tool can connect, too, pulling additional context straight into its own chat.

Unlimited AI code completion for free

Get AI suggestions as you type, with clear diffs you can accept or dismiss – no credits consumed, no interruptions.

Bring Your Own Key

Connect your personal OpenAI or Anthropic account directly – no separate JetBrains AI subscription required.

Supported languages

One IDE, many languages. CLion supports C, C++, Rust, Python, Assembly, and more, so you can stay in one environment no matter what your project demands.

Master modern C and C++

CLion delivers modern C and C++ support with deep understanding of your entire codebase as well as completions and inspections to help you with types, templates, macros, and includes. It supports the latest C++ standard features, from C++20 modules to C++26 contracts and reflection.

Python

CLion includes essential Python support for testing and tooling alongside your C/C++ project – pytest suites, build scripts, and general automation, backed by full debugging and an interactive console – all without leaving the IDE.

Rust

Full-featured Rust support comes built into CLion via the bundled Rust plugin. Code completion, inspections, debugging with LLDB and GDB, testing, code coverage, and Cargo integration are available, all at feature parity with RustRover, JetBrains' dedicated Rust IDE.

Low-level programming languages

CLion has you covered when working close to the metal. It includes syntax highlighting for assembly files (.s and .asm), a full side-by-side disassembly view, and coding assistance for linker script (LD) and device tree (.dts/.dtsi) files.

Code analysis

Catch issues before they come back to haunt you. CLion's code analysis works as you type, highlighting errors, flagging warnings, and suggesting fixes on the fly, so problems get resolved in the editor, not in production.

Catch bugs before you run

On-the-fly static analysis highlights errors and warnings as you type, with one-click quick-fixes.

Clang-tidy integration

CLion integrates clang-tidy directly into the editor, so checks run on the fly alongside CLion's own inspections, with quick-fixes available via Alt+Enter. It also supports .clang-tidy config files, custom clang-tidy binaries, and per-check options, so your team's existing linting setup works without reconfiguration.

MISRA

Built-in inspections cover a subset of MISRA C 2012, MISRA C++ 2008, and MISRA C++:2023 checks directly in the editor. Catch the most common violations as you code, so you spend less time on compliance and more time crafting ship-ready features.

Embedded development

CLion is the IDE for embedded and automotive development that keeps you vendor-flexible and focused on your firmware.

First-class support for the STM32 ecosystem

Create or open STM32 projects directly in CLion – CMake-based or CubeMX-based (.ioc) – and launch auto-generated run and debug configurations for your ST-Link probe, without manual configuration. CLion and STM32 work together – just like that!

Zephyr, fully integrated

Open, build, and debug Zephyr West projects without leaving the IDE. CLion detects your Zephyr workspace automatically and sets up build and flash configurations for you, so you stay focused on your firmware, not your toolchain. When you start debugging, RTOS-aware thread views show what each task is doing, so you can track down concurrency bugs faster.

Unified embedded development experience

CLion works with any GCC- or IAR-based toolchain, covering ARM, Xtensa (ESP32, ESP8266), RISC-V, and AVR (Arduino) hardware. It also has built-in PlatformIO support, so you can open and build projects without manual CMake setup. OpenOCD, SEGGER J-Link, and GDB-compatible debug servers are supported out of the box, alongside Peripheral View for ARM devices and RTOS thread awareness for FreeRTOS and ThreadX – everything you need for on-chip debugging in one place.

Compliance findings in the IDE

When compliance violations are found late, they cost exponentially more to fix. Import SARIF reports from Parasoft C/C++test, Clang Static Analyzer, or any compatible tool and review MISRA, AUTOSAR, and CERT violation findings alongside your code – no dashboards, no context switching.

Debugger

CLion's debugger is a powerful tool for diagnosing issues in applications and tests. Its advanced features and seamless integration streamline debugging and save you time. Benefit from full integration with the GDB backend on all platforms and LLDB on macOS and Linux.

Constexpr debugger

CLion is the only IDE that lets you step through compile-time evaluations. Inspect constexpr and consteval code, see which branch fired, and understand exactly how the compiler executed your logic.

All the debugging tools in one place

Take advantage of visual breakpoints, watches, memory view, and thread inspection – all without leaving the editor.

Build systems support

Whatever build system your project uses, CLion supports it – CMake, Makefile, Meson, and compilation databases, all ready out of the box.

CMake support

Configure CMake projects with ease and take advantage of code completion in CMake files, automatic project reloads, and CMake Presets support.

Bazel support

Configuration transitions support, a built-in Starlark REPL, and an execution log parser for performance analysis are available via the Bazel for CLion plugin.

Makefile, Meson, compilation database

CLion works with the build system you already use – no project migration required.

Testing frameworks

Write tests, run them, and see results without leaving the IDE. CLion has built-in support for GoogleTest, Catch2, Boost.Test, and Doctest – for both CMake and Meson projects – so testing can be part of your workflow, not an afterthought.

Run tests from the editor

Click the gutter icon next to any test. Results appear in a dedicated tool window, letting you easily navigate to failures.

Code navigation and refactorings

Whether you're working on a small firmware project or a codebase the size of LLVM or Chromium, navigation is instant, refactorings are reliable, and the search function works across your entire project without slowing you down.

Search Everywhere

Find any symbol, file, action, or setting in one keystroke.

Navigation and Find Usages

Navigate to declarations or definitions, usages, type hierarchies, and call chains. It works across headers and sources.

Safe, fast refactorings

Rename, extract, inline, change signature – refactorings that work across your entire project, not just the open file.

Code folding and structure

Fold any code region, browse file structure, and keep large files manageable.

Migration from other IDEs

Moving from another IDE shouldn't mean starting from scratch. CLion is designed to meet you wherever you are – your shortcuts, your projects, and your workflow, so you can be productive from day one.

Open VS Code projects instantly

CLion reads VS Code project configuration from the c_cpp_properties.json file. If you have a project you’ve been working on in VS Code, you can simply open it in CLion and continue working without reconfiguring your project setup.

Keymaps

Predefined keymaps for Visual Studio, Eclipse, Xcode, Emacs, and VS Code mean you won’t have to re-train your muscle memory. You can further customize existing shortcuts or even create your own.

Your build system remains untouched

CLion works with CMake, Makefile, Meson, Bazel, and compilation databases – no project migration required.

Settings synchronization

Keep your CLion setup consistent across machines with settings synchronization via your JetBrains account.
